I grew up on a small farm in Germany and moved to the US in my Twenties to go to school.
I'm guessing that you are here, because you have been stressing over how to lose weight. I can relate! That was me during most of my twenties. I thought I was eating fairly healthy but I carried extra weight in my legs and face and could never quite figure out how to lose it.
I tried dieting – only eating salad for a while, or not eating at all. Nothing seemed to work. Until one day I realized the answer wasn’t in how much I was eating but in the quality of the foods. I was regularly eating frozen meals and using packaged foods (Powders mixed with water, anyone?). It never even occurred to me to read the ingredients list.
Fast-forward a few more years when a friend introduced me to smoothies. That was a real game changer. Here was finally a way to easily get in all the required fruits and veggies each day. My body was flooded with nutrients, which in turn helped kickstart my metabolism. A game-changer! My husband who has been an athlete all his life and not overweight at all actually leaned out A LOT when he started drinking one smoothie a day. It was mind-blowing what getting the right nutrients can do!
I truly believe that a lot of today’s ailments and chronic diseases are caused by the poor-quality foods we eat. Our bodies are not equipped to digest some of what we’re calling ‘food’ today. It has changed so much over the last century. Just take a look at any ingredient label in the grocery store. Would your grandma recognize the ingredients? Probably not.
In the spring 2018, my husband and I went on a 30-day elimination diet. No gluten, no dairy, no sugar, no soy, no corn. After the 30 days, we slowly reintroduced each food category. I had headaches each time I ate something with gluten. Similarly, I had bellyaches and sinus issues each time I ate dairy. Wow! I had lived with regularly occurring migraines and sinus issues for so long, I had taken them as a given - “it’s just something I have to live with.” Food is powerful, and it can nourish or harm you.
I myself continue to learn by listening to my body and furthering my education in the health and wellness field. And I continue to make small changes to improve my overall health.
You might be wondering why I have written a book with recipes for prediabetes. Well, you, me and probably almost everyone we know has been touched by this disease. My mother-in-law was a type 2 diabetic and died from complications at the young age of 61. It sparked in me the wish to help others avoid this preventable disease. If you have prediabetes, take action before it turns into type 2 and gets even harder.
I've had the pleasure to work with many amazing women. Just recently, I had a program participant who had been told she was prediabetic. Her doctor had suggested she try a 2-months all-liquid diet. I'm so glad she found me instead. Within less than 8 weeks, she lost 22 lbs. - and that's with eating delicious and nutritious foods. She was so excited and proud of her accomplishment.
And you can do it, too!
